Your life’s purpose

I struggled for a long time looking for my life’s purpose. I knew if I was in alignment with that purpose I’d be happy and life would be easy and effortless. That was a useful story and it allowed me to stay distracted for a number of years.

Eventually I realized life is an opportunity to either deepen my connection with my filter system or with my spirit. Looking for my life’s purpose was a way of deepening my connection with my filter system. My spirit is limitless and I get to make up my own life’s purpose, there is nobody else out there telling me what to do.

Life is such an emotionally rich experience or at least it can be and I can savor every moment or kick and scream. Life is emotionally neutral until I tell myself a story. All of my emotions are created by what I tell myself.

Life is like a wonderful amusement park and we can choose what kind of rides we go on and how long we want to stay. Today my life’s purpose is to love as completely and fully and unconditionally everything that I can. I can love all of life and the variety of behaviors and events that manifest in my reality. All of the dramas in life are fluff and I can use them to distract me from the love or not.

What will you choose as your life’s purpose? Do you want to be happy or miserable? Feel loved and deeply connected or alone, judged and unloved?

Moment by moment, thought by thought we choose what we are going to connect with – love or fear – spirit or filter system. My suggestion is to focus on loving everything and everyone and see where that takes you. A simple look at the world and we can see where judgment and fear takes us.

Join me in choosing love – or not.

Toltec Wisdom

I have a quote on my web site by Basho that says, Seek not to follow in the footsteps of the men of old, seek instead what they sought. If any tradition or religion had ‘the answer’ we would be living in the solution.

There is no such things as ‘the truth’ or ‘the answer’ it is all relative. In a profound sense there is no out there – the out there we seek lies within. It is only when we connect with our own inner wisdom, moment by moment that we experience our limitless nature. Yet we spend some much time searching for the answers outside of ourselves.
When my book The Toltec Way came out a radio interviewer asked me what I could possible find useful in the Toltec Tradition. The History channel had just aired a documentary about the Toltec in which they talked about their custom of killing babies and eating their brains. He wanted to know how I could find anything spiritual about a race that ate babies.

I was glad I had seen the special or I wouldn’t have known what he was talking about. For years I have I talked about the wisdom that came from a race of people I call the Ancient Ones, a race of people that predated the Toltec. When I began studying with my Hawaiian Aunty she talked about the same thing. She teaches about ancient Hawaiian spirituality, a wisdom that predates the Tahitian invasion.

The wisdom that we seek comes from a deep and abiding connection with our spirit. It isn’t about following any tradition – it is about creating a direct connection for yourself that helps you remain in the moment, connected with your limitless nature.

So what you can you do on a regular basis to deepen your connection with your spiritual essence? The Toltec tradition is rich in tools that will help you deepen your connect.

Some of the things that I fond useful are:

Meditation
Recapitulation
Journaling – tracking your thoughts
Observing your filter system with the willingness to let it go
Awareness
Transformation
Intent

The Universe

Is this a safe universe or a hostile one?

Deciding whether this is a safe universe or a hostile one is one of the most profound questions you can answer for yourself. From the perspective of our mind there certainly seems to be ample evidence that this world is unsafe. When viewed from the perspective of our spirit we realize that not only is the universe safe but it is also child proof.

Everything in this universe is made up of energy. Energy can never be destroyed it can only change form. Yes, your body will die but you won’t. When viewed through the eyes of your spirit death isn’t a bad thing it is simply you changing form.

Once we realize this is a safe universe how we see things changes completely. We can step into dominion and have the opportunity to see the gift in every event, every happening, and every moment of our existence.

An event when viewed through the eyes of fear suddenly becomes an incredible opportunity to deepen our ability to love. When we are filled with love we feel expansive and connected. When we are fearful and judgmental we often feel small and disconnected.

As you move through your day notice whether you are seeing the world as loving and supportive or fearful and adversarial. If you absolutely knew in the core of your being this was a safe universe what would you choose to do right now? How would you respond to the events in your life?

Peace of Mind

Peace of mind is something no one can give us and no one can take away from us. We are totally in charge of our peace of mind although there sure are times it doesn’t seem that way. When the neighbors dog wakes us up for the hundredth time in the middle of the night, or our beloved has just walked out the door or . . . there certainly seems to be a variety of external reasons for our disturbance. When we are willing to assume responsibility for our peace of mind it is much less illusive and much more available to us.

What kinds of thoughts bring you peace of mind? What sorts of thoughts create inner turmoil? It really is simple. If you want peace of mind avoid thoughts that create turmoil. Change the stories you tell yourself about life. What ever we focus our attention on we get more of. If you tell yourself stories that generate fear you will get more fear. If you tell yourself stories that create a feeling of peace you will get more peace.

It isn’t about denial – you don’t look at war and ignore it. Instead you can learn to look at war and see the perfection in it. Each spirit is experiencing whatever it needs to experience in order to remember its divinity. So you can look at war and acknowledge it is a stretch for you to understand the perfection, but remain willing to see war through the eyes of your spirit.

Whatever is in your life is there by invitation. If you acknowledge yourself as the creative, powerful, spiritual being you are you can learn how to send out different types of invitations. So many people tell me they want to find peace of mind, yet are unwilling to change their stories.

Ask yourself, “What do I want to experience right now?” and ask yourself if you are willing to experience it right now regardless of external circumstances.

I want more money. Are you willing to feel what it feels like to be incredibly rich with no debts right now?

I want a loving husband or wife. Are you willing to feel loved and connected and experience all the things you think a relationship will bring you right now?

I want more time. Are you willing to feel free and unconstrained and know you have as much time as you want or need right now in this moment?

If you aren’t willing to give yourself something right now in this moment you will never have it. If you are waiting to be fulfilled until some time in the future the catch is – by the time the future gets here it is this moment. This moment is the only point in time we have the power to change. So right here, right now give yourself permission to have it all – whatever all is for you.

Valentine’s Day

As most Christian holydays St. Valentine’s Day has ancient roots as well. This was a time of purification and a day in which mates were chosen for the coming year. It is shortly after Imbolc when in the mythical cycle of the goddess she returns to earth as a young girl. The sun is returning and the earth is getting ready for spring.

I wasn’t a very popular kid in grade school. I remember going to school and giving out Valentine’s cards to all my little friends. At the end of the day we would compare who had the most cards. Funny how a day meant to celebrate love can turn into a competition that leaves some people feeling lacking.

I used to have a bumper sticker that said “Commit Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Beauty.” I was watching a young couple buying a box of Valentine cards for one of their children and I thought about buying a box and randomly placing them on people’s windshields.

What would happen if everyday became a celebration of love? My Aunty talk about living aloha – living love. What if for a day you changed all your thoughts into love? What if you purposely spent sometime just radiating love to your world and allowed love to melt away any judgments?

In the Toltec Tradition there is a powerful tool called recapitulation. (You can find an explanation of it on my website at http://susangregg.com/questions_and_answers.htm)
It is a way of using the breath to let go of the past. I think of it is as a way to melt away all of my old, limiting belies that stop me from experiencing my divinity and seeing the divine in everyone and every thing around me.

Love is always the answer especially when we love that which we would normally judge. Make every day a happy love day!

With lots of love and aloha,
Susan
